I’d really like to know exactly what their powers are. It seems like Abel’s is just magic psychic fog that can do anything the plot demands. While we do know that Doc has 1 foot in the memory absorption and presumably manipulation camp, he seems to have other abilities beyond just that. I hope someday we get to know just what Opa Schtein did to them.
Abel’s powers are just staggeringly powerful pyschokinesis of the reality warping variety, so yeah, he can basically do anything.
Dr. Schtein is a memory vampire with some uhhhh extra stuff we’re about to go into. :)
That or Schtein is more a general-purpose psychic vampire: so using psychic powers on him means you get drained just as much as touching him does. Should have just shot him.
That Image is from “The Daughter Of The Lilies” isn’t it?
Well looks like his power improved since the last time they faced. Why is that anyway? I guess absorbing more memories power him up.
Practice makes perfect, or as close as one can get.
I was so excited when I saw the preview on tumblr swear to gods
Holy S!@T this looks amazing!!! I love the shading as well as the contrast of the alt-powers and blood mixing with the Doc.’s complexion. I honestly expected a third party to intervene like Opa or the Docs new henchman.
Great work as always my friend.
Is it just me or is Doc stealing or learning to mimic Abel’s powers? That or just using his powers of persuasion and memory replication to temporarily gain some form of control over Abel’s powers.
Side-note, Does the bleeding signify strenuous use of ones powers? Similar to the movie Chronicle from 2012?
Or as seen in Stranger Things.
Or as seen in Scanners (those movies from the 1980s).
Copious bleeding from eyes and ears and nose is a common trope for psionic battles, either overuse of powers (in this case Schtein’s) or psychics remotely killing people via bio-psi by stopping their heart or giving them aneurisms of the brain (what Abel seems to be trying to do here).
Man, this gives me flashbacks to the Conspiracy X RPG campaign we played during the late 1990s. Think a rip-off of X-Files and Delta Green… it had space aliens, Cold War alien conspiracies, psychic powers of a low-key sort (not superhero level, more 1st season of Heroes level), psi-crystals, secret orbital mind control/orbital laser satellites, and name-dropped names of real historical Cold War nutty stuff like MK-ULTRA, Area 51, Groom Lake, Project Bluebook, Projekt Alexis all over the place. You played agents of Aegis, a secret shadow-governmental organization who get recruited from official US gov organizations (like the FBI, CDC, DEA, ATF, CIA, etc) or work directly as members of Aegis and only masquerade as employees of such organizations. And yes, you can play a psychic operative (from the American side or the Russian side, although ConX was set after 1990 after the collapse of the Soviet Union) or someone piloting “alien saucers” built from stolen alien tech. It was pretty fun, although the game system suffered from the problem that the writers had only ever published a single official adventure for it before the game died, so our gamemaster had to scrounge for additional suitable scenarios from game systems with similar X-Files-esque modern supernatural scifi settings.
Conspiracy X was way more “down to Earth” than Unknown Armies or World of Darkness 1.0 though.
he’s bleeding because Abel was hurting him actually
On a completely unrelated note have you red the manga series “To Your Eternity” by Yoshitoki ÅŒima? I think you would like it if you get past the first 5 pages or so.
I have not! I am like a big manga noob I haven’t really read any outside of like… junji itoh and lupin the third and maison ikkoku and azumanga daioh there it is all the mangas I’ve ever read.
I’ll have to check it out!
Its a unique premise, hit or miss with most but I enjoyed the concept behind the main character.
P.S. Love the art you added in the description. I can see the Doc. becoming a Necromancer.
I feel like were about to permanently say good bye to my boy leonard and that makes me sad :( even if he was just a background character u_u
you know I’d actually forgotten the name I gave him so god bless you for reminding me
i’d hazard a guess that doc managed to figure out a way to alter his memory vampire ability so that he can at the very least mess with a persons memories from a distance.
“You fool! You have activated my trap card, and everyone knows red smoke beats pink smoke!”
“Don’t move or I’ll murder you, guy we’re here to murder!”
Seriously dude, just pull the trigger. You new to the murdering-guys-at-the-quarry game?
boy that would a disappointing end to a comic
This I will not deny. I have seen comics end like that too.
Can you give me some example comics that end like that? Im interested in reading one.
Oh no, you would not want to read them. I doubt they still exist, anyway. They are all fine examples of the creator giving the F— up and killing their characters.
One story ended that way because the creator finished the storyline the night he committed suicide. The other, the comic was YEARS in the making and then the creator quit about… 25 pages before it could have been neatly ended. He just killed all the characters in a single badly written page and then cussed out his readers for being upset.
Damn, sorry to hear that. The only thing that resembles the comics you described that I have seen was when a writer wrote himself into a corner then asked the fans who he should kill off to further the plot. He took a pole then killed that character off 2 pages later and did this 4 more times before I left the story since he seemed to no longer have any planned course for the story to take. As of last month I cannot find it anymore lol But no suicides there.
Most comics tend to die with a whimper rather than a bang.
Hah, yeah, I’ve read quite a few where the authors wrote themselves into a corner. They usually quit and rewrite from the beginning but never really recover their momentum. Taking a poll on who to kill, though, that’s a new one to me!
But yeah, the suicide thing was… shocking.
At the same time you have to admit this kinda doesn’t work right now.
sudden deaths are ok if a character’s story is pretty much done. I’d mention examples I can think of but man that is some spoiler stuff haha
But in this comic’s case he hasn’t even gotten to be a cool villain yet, and also you know, all that stuff with delia, and eliza and a million other story threads that kinda need him alive to resolve
I suppose his inherent plot armor kinda takes the tension out of some stuff, but I can’t guarantee anyone else’s safety >:D
To be fair you could have him die and come back using his grandfathers “gifts” or through some other means of science with the cost of him losing something in the process each time.
Sounds like a Marvel comic.
Have you seen his grandfather? He made a fungus zombie army XD. That and he is kinda like one himself lol.
Panel 2’s powers over his head look like devil horns, it’s a super wonderful creep effect with that evil grin and line. :D
I would have said a dark crown bu that works too.
I love how that clarification regarding sunrise vs light pollution felt needed, lol.
The underlying assumption(s) involved is amusing.
I guess. I honestly don’t ever know what to write under the comics so whatever pops into my head I write there.
and I didn’t want people to be confused or something if a couple pages later it’s totally dark again.
Fair enough. I found it darkly amusing, because it shows how modern pollution short-circuits our romantic “fairy tale” preconceptions so common in movies esp horror movies… where the light of dawn symbolizes salvation (usually because the monsters burn up in sunlight).
hah, I didnt even think about that. It’s just hard to escape light pollution these days, even out where they are, nowhere’s ville, west virginia
Yeah I figured it was Cedar Park or Round Rock or something
they’re in west virginia.
Shut up, Beavis.
I believe the phrase is ‘settle down, beavis.’
Both have been said many a time! So long as the Doc calls this Beavis a fartknocker, it should all work out fine anyway.
Larry looks a bit surprise there. So much for being cool and defiant. Doc is much better at it, even acting cool and defiant while bleeding from his ears, instead of resorting to swift action. Have to like a guy so principled.
When two Scanners duel, everybody else should run.
Or at least get an umbrella before the heads start to explode.
Fun fact, they did the head explosion effect by making a latex mask of someone’s head, filling it with canned dog food, then shooting it from behind with a shotgun.
haha gross. I love practical effects so much
Where’d they use that, Dude?
Scanners https://youtu.be/B_Lnz64vXB8
I like how the psychic wisp things in the second panel look like devil horns. It works really well.
