wait, when did he get cut?!? And why is the stuff glowing?? And why is the art so fucking good?!?! and the hair is all awesome and aghaoigfhsaofhadufhalejehdsfausldfhasfuhs
“Trotting Moose” is probably something that roughly means little idiot, as a trotting moose is kind of stupid. It’s sort of like how “it’s the Bee’s knees” or “Sick as a dog” might make little sense to someone who learned english as a second language. Also, what is he doing, trying to make him like his “special” children?
I don’t think so… Trottel – idiot, a form of trotten, IE plodding. -chen, indicated a diminutive form. Little idiot. I have no idea where the moose part is coming in. I think google is just being weird. Orville would say ‘Dat Trottelken’ btw which is kinda funny. I guess. Anyway, maybe it could be some related idiom, I dunno. I AM enjoying looking this stuff up, for what it’s worth. :D
Indeed. Trottel usually used to indicate the town or village idiot. So Trottel = Idiot. It’s a slightly older term but still in use. Suits Opa Stein perfectly.
I think the translator sees the “trott”-part as a form of German “trotten”; and then “elch” which is German for “elk/moose”. And at last it just keeps the “en” ending or something like that…
“Back in my day, kids didn’t talk back. If you had a problem with your elders, the appropriate course of action was to politely lay waste to an entire city.”
Opa does not have TIME to explain things to meinen enkel! Opa dislikes silly questions.
Glorious expression, such a paternal look for someone who looked like a total psychopath 5 panels ago.
Oh, I was just going off what Orville said to Schtein a few pages ago…
I don’t know any German-ish. : /
Why include subtitles when you’ve got us to screw them up for you? It leads to such comedies as mistranslating ‘little idiot’ as ‘trotting moose’! Or something involving Vanessa.
AAWW heck yes. How the hell’d Orville know Schtein was coming? How did he know that he’d not gotten overweight or something, thus anticipating that his arms would fit in those restraint-thingies? WHY IS ORVILLE EXAMINING THE VARIOUS MOON PHASES ON HIS DESKTOP? I need next week to be now =[
I think Google Translate is picking up the “elch” in trottELCHen… and it’s not sure what to do with it. It knows what “trottel” by itself is, but I think putting it in the diminutive form “-chen” is something Google can’t pick up on. So there’s your explanation! :D
It’s the Bing translator doing that, and I have absolutely no idea what its problem is. Vanessa is a made-up name invented by Jonathan Smith as a pseudonym for one of his literary characters and it gained popularity as a real name in the 19th century. It has also been used as the name for a genus of butterflies, but I can find no evidence of it having anything at all to do with moose, German, or idiots. My conclusion: don’t use Bing.
(Moon phases? They look more like colonoscopy vision to me…but it is blurry.) You have captured perfect expressions of fear in this page. MENSCH. And seeing Opa’s queue is just *shivers* ugh. X3 Great work as usual!
I’m still wondering what “message” Schtein was supposed to give to Opa Orville. It seemed kind of a thin excuse to go to all the trouble of getting him out of prison. Was there REALLY nobody else who could deliver the message?… Or, are they actually on Orville’s team, and they wanted to bring his unfinished project to him… hmmm? NEXT WEAK NOW PLEASE!!
Your comic writing and art are amazing. Today, I want to point out how wonderfully you depict the drastically different attitudes between the characters. Herville is freaking out, as is natural, yet we see clearly that to Opa this is as significant as a little child demanding his bedtime story 15 minutes early. Well done, as usual.
I’m finding it seriously creepy that our bad guy is an Asimov lookalike. I mean, the late, great writer looked a tad creepy in the first place, but now you have him basically doing everything but the ‘muahahah’, I I am having serious trouble processing it… lol
I still can’t get over the transition in style back in the first chapter, which continued on in the form of art progression to this very page. Great work, Grundy!
I can tell they’re going to be great friends!
Also wow look at that I’m first…probably because it’s 3 a fucking m. hahhaa
yeah you were ON IT
wait, when did he get cut?!? And why is the stuff glowing?? And why is the art so fucking good?!?! and the hair is all awesome and aghaoigfhsaofhadufhalejehdsfausldfhasfuhs
When he got stabbed in jail by Drew MacManus
correct, he got shanked right in the kidney.
I think that’s an old scar from prison.
I love the way his situation is going worst crescendo : after an explotion, prison, zombies, now there’s the mad scientist doing experiments … Great !
…Did Opa just call Schtein a ‘trotting moose’ or is Google translate full of crap?
google translate is full of crap, it means ‘little idiot’.
My translator said something like “Don’t worry about Vanessa” :/ Methinks it might have lost its mind
sheesh. Automatic translators really hate this word apparently. It’s not even that hard a word, good lord.

I should have read the rest of the comments first because Jenny already delivered the same explanation. :/
I love Opa’s “Kids these days…” sort of expression in the last panel.
“Kids, so pushy!”
“Back in my day, kids didn’t talk back. If you had a problem with your elders, the appropriate course of action was to politely lay waste to an entire city.”
Old body, new body, brain transplant …
No, it doesnt seem to be the case.
Waste no time getting him on the table. Grandpa hates leaving projects unfinished.
I’m going to ask a question that is prob burning everyone’s brain off : ” What’s in that bottle Orville’s holding in the 2nd panel”? T: ~
It appears to be bottled water.
correct. It only appears green because of reflections and lighting. It’s just water. Gotta stay hydrated!
OH, my gosh, what is happening, the doo doo hits the fan once more. Suspense really is in the nature of webcomics, so many cliffhangers.
P.S. *whispers* Fanservice.
*whispers* I know , Bro. <3
aw yeah check out that emaciated pasty frame *fans self*
It’s givin’ me tha vapors!~ -also fans self –
This is probably why nobody ever visits Grampa Orville.
Patience?! Hell I don’t have the Patience to wait till next week to find out whats going on! Damn you Grundy!
*sits and waits for a week*
this comic has taught me to be very afraid of that particular shade of blue-green.
that sentence in panel6 doesn’t really roll off the tongue, does it?
what, because it’s a run-on sentence, or because of Orville’s grammar?
Dude, your gramps is shooting you up with glow-stick juice! That is not good for you, dude
Opa does not have TIME to explain things to meinen enkel! Opa dislikes silly questions.
Glorious expression, such a paternal look for someone who looked like a total psychopath 5 panels ago.
think you mean seinem enkel – his grandson. ;) Herville isn’t your grandson… unless… !! Plot twist!
Hahah maybe I should include subtitles for my comic (not really)
Oh, I was just going off what Orville said to Schtein a few pages ago…

I think those are brain scans?
Haha, I know x] Just being pesty whilst I processed the awesomeness.

That makes sense, but that still doesn’t explain where Vanessa comes in.

coincidentally, the name Orville shares similar origins. Made up for a book in the 19th century, and it just really caught on. For some reason.
I assume that’s like the 19th century equivalent of naming your kid Karkat nowadays >_>
Haha, Opa Schtein’s last bit of dialog reminds me of A Scandal in Bohemia.

FANSERVICE! Ooo la la look at that fine half naked man on the table
Remember the times you visited your estranged granddad, and he straps you down on a gurney and experiments on you? Good times…
Actually I think “trotting moose” is a really cool insult. I will try to use it … sometime, somewhere.
Woah 50 comments? I think thats the most I’ve seen here! Awesome job , Grundy!!!
most comments in a page for this chapter at least. My top record is 117. Someday I’ll beat that!
It helps when I actually update regularly ha ha ha
We love ya anyway
Mr. Grundy, how do you manage to handle dialect and accents so well? I read Gramps’ here in a very distinct accent, it’s amazing.
I am sure now. Schtein has enhanced smell. He has too, with that nose.
With those glasses I can’t help but imagine him wearing a disco-suit…
Foxy Grandpa ;D
Opa’s between “well, if I have to” and “hmmm no, don’t have to say, can just knock you out if I wanna……”
And yet no one notices the delicious little ponytail Grandpa has going on? Sideburns -and- ponytail. *rubs hands briskly*
I could write sonnets about that ponytail.

I love it that Opa Schtein is already above and beyond the ‘mahahah’
I love it that Opa Schtein is already above and beyond the ‘muahahah’
Gah! I can’t wait much longer for the next update! I wanna hear Opa Schtein’s explanation too!!
