Wow. THAT must be an obsessive-compulsive’s nightmare, bein’ down there. I must say, though, Doc with that gas maks is pretty cool. Looks like you’re having a blast with the glow from his eyes.
And your backgrounds will never cease to amaze me. Phenomenal.
The quality of your _art_work gets better and better. The colours are incredible – this chapter in “fungy” Chicago reminds me of the eerie landscapes portraited on some old LP covers…and I’ll repeat what others said already – the dim glow of Doc’s eyes through the glasses of the mask is just brilliant. If you come to some comic fair in Europe, I’ll be in line for an autographed drawing :)
This hasn’t been said yet, so I’ll say it now; Doc’s posture in panel 4 is perfect. He is currently walking into his own personal hell, where everything is covered with either dirt or spores and the germs turn you into shambling, brainless monster. And you can tell by his arms!
Checking updates on my phone, and had to zoom in just to make sure I didn’t miss any of the awesome work on the backgrounds – they’re too good to not give due attention too! Can’t wait too see where this adventure leads . . . Love this story and characters, it’s always amazing when a storyteller can make such flawed personalities so lovable LOL
I literally just started reading this three hours ago. I was randomly going through Devianart, came across some Buckaroo Banzai fanart, checked out the rest of your stuff, fucking fell in LOVE with the eyes of what I now know is Schtein, and completely devoured this. Seriously, my eyes are red and I have a slight headache from staring at the screen for so long.
Can I ask what your character creation process is like?
Gonna have to go through this again, assign voices to the characters and such (because I’m fuckin’ weird like that).
Awesome work, awesome damn work, GG.
Gosh I don’t know about my character creation process, it’s basically like ‘throw a bunch of stuff at the wall, see what sticks, then connect the dots’. I dunno, it’s not really a thing I THINK about so much as just kind of do.
I was just curious because I’m majoring in screenwriting, and my favorite thing to do is create characters. I’ve been using three characters I made when I was 14 or so in nearly all of my assignments, much to my teacher’s annoyance.
I’d love to create a comic like this for them, as it’s more fitting than a short movie, but I can’t really draw… I can write, but not draw. Been trying to get my more art-inclined friends to draw some sketches of their interpretations, but they don’t seem so into that sort of thing.
Also, is your story fully written, or do you just do chapters at a time? Sorry for all the questions :$. Just very fascinated by this.
It’s fully plotted but not written if that makes sense. I have all the major arcs planned out, but a lot of the dialogue is still nebulous.
hmm. Sometimes it’s easier to think up new characters if you try and give them a purpose in the story first. And then plan a personality around that purpose, see how that personality would interact with the story and so on, give them a backstory from there. Sometimes it takes time to grow a character.
Ha ha I dunno if I am the best person to answer, I don’t exactly churn out characters either, a lot of the people in this comic are recycled out of an older project, or took a couple years to develop.
Oh, and Schtein’s eyes…. As a kid, I couldn’t do proper eyes on anything, so instead I would do full black with a red iris because it was easier (and looked cooler) to do. I drew a lot of demons (they were good demons, though, just looked ‘scary’). I know it’s a popular thing to do, but it’s just funny to see it again.
Well, thanks for answering the questions, seriously cannot wait for the next page; I promise not to be annoying any more.
I just realized that the little icon thingy next to String Theory on my bookmark toolbar is Stein wearing his gas mask. No wonder that looked so familiar… XD
out of the blue – I was going through the ‘extras’, and I know I remember some time ago someone submitted some fanart or a filler or something that was an animation of Phineas going all valentiney over the Doc while they were in prison, but it’s not in the extras. Does it still exist somewhere in the space-time continuum?
it does! I just need to figure out a good way to display it in the extras page. Probably a link or something. I never seem to get around to doing site maintenance stuff…
Schtein’s eyes glowing through his mask is the best thing ever. I’m hoping he wears it around for a while so I can look at it OvO

Bravo on the backgrounds- this is just fucking impressive
Lovely backgrounds, as always.
So, the snot Annie is describing here is the same snot that Delia had to investigate last chapter, right?
I think the snot or ooze from last chapter was from one of the kids the grandfather worked on.
It was definitely different. I guess snot like is my go to descriptor, oh no, it’s like a stephen king trope oh dear lord.
possibly my favourite sociopath ever ;)

Holy shiiiiiit the art is fantastic!
So I’m guessing “they” are people who are infected by some Cordyceps-like fungus?
I love how the mushrooms fluoresce after Schtein and the others pass by, and ALL your luminous effects are top-notch!
Oh man oh man! I haven’t checked back in a while, those last 5 pages were awesome! I really appreciate your hard work on this comic. :)
This sure is different from where the comic started, it’s always nice to see what happens next in this story.
Oh god, it’s like you reached up my nose and pulled out my nightmares and put them in gorgeous comic format.
What is really happening in the last picture? Is that dead man breathing out some strange gas?
it appears to be a shroom sprout spreading spores
Oh man, fungus zombies? Like the ones that infect ants and stuff? Yay, science!!!

Ah! We see the origins of what will become Miyazaki’s “toxic jungle” in a thousand years!

Great job as always, Is that a zombie head in the last two panels.
Well, I guess now we fully know WHY Schtein is a mycophobe!
This is getting so freaking cool fff. Now we know the gas mask wasn’t just a fashion statement in promo pics before this (not that I’m complaining).
Anyone else notice ‘snot’ is kind of descriptive of the scene Delia walked in on earlier in the story? :3

oh a fellow buckaroo fan, yaaaay. :D

hah, that’s strange, I find the red on black eyes harder to draw than normal eyes.
I just realized that the little icon thingy next to String Theory on my bookmark toolbar is Stein wearing his gas mask. No wonder that looked so familiar… XD
I thought it was the T-45d Power Armor from Fallout 3, but now that you say that, it makes more sense.
I’m done commenting, I swear.

Aw, I’m all caught up. That was a fantastic couple days of archive trawling. XD
