Okay, quick summary. Schtein thought it would be funny to throw a litter of kittens into a forced evolution machine. [http://www.stringtheorycomic.com/comics/chapterone/pagethirteen/] All of them but Marcus (the cat in the current comic) died due to tumors and fun things like that. Marcus mutated to have opposable thumbs and has the intelligence of a young child. Delia picked Marcus up while looking for Schtein after Schtein sabotaged Langstrom’s version of the transporter, murdering a slew of people, and getting him sent to fake death/ prison. *whew* Good enough?
It used to be Schtein’s. Granted, those of us who don’t go back and re-read the comic obsessively while waiting for updates can easily forget. Grundy, when it’s been more than a year since readers have seen a character, that’s a sign you need to update more often. Cheers!
When it’s been a year since we’ve seen a character, that means the story has been following other events. It has nothing to do with update frequency. Keep up the awesome work!
That was meant to be more of a compliment than criticism. I like this comic a lot, so naturally would like to see updates more often. Of course, I understand that the amazing artwork he puts into each page slows it down. The quality makes it worth the wait. And yes, the complexity of plot that makes for several story lines is a good thing. I just thought the poor reader who was confused about the cat could’ve gotten a kinder response.
I have great respect for your comic, Mr. Grundy, and apologize if I sounded like I was making a petty complaint about your update schedule. It’s amazing what you can do in only a week!
Hasn’t he continued to mutate since he exited the mutation machine? I think the author’s notes say he’s getting smarter, and has grown thumbs. By the end of this comic, I bet he’ll look like a Thundercat.
An update! With marcus & delia :D I didn’t realize how much I missed them until now. Also love the spotted Garfield on the tv screen. Beautiful as always!
Yeah, I once had a cat that stole pizza too. He even once ate some that had green chile on it, seemed to like it. Of course, this is the same cat that liked peas so much he actually begged for them (in his own cat-like way).
I remember Marcus. It makes sense he would hate Garfield, who doesn’t. Yesterday a stray came up and let me pet him. I only had pizza to share so I gave him a slice. That slice was gone within minutes, I’m glad he seemed to like it.
It’s great that he can learn to read from such a bright woman.Get him away from that TV, it’s bad for you.
That last panel… You’ve drawn him in what some people like to call the “catloaf” position, but his back in dipping downwards instead of arching up. It’s kinda making him look more dog-like. But maybe we can chalk that up to the mutation. XD
oh, I see what you mean. No, let’s not chalk it up to that, let’s chalk it up to artist inexperience with drawing cats. <:V
Ah, the lessons we learn doing comics~
I’m still getting used to Marcus’ new look (I still think of him as as that baby-faced kitty in chapter one!), but I love how you’re not afraid to use the plastic qualities of his face so he can have specific, individual expressions. His paw gestures also add a lot–one second, he’s got that human palm-out gesture, but the next, he’s all folded up like a regular kitty, and I think that’s key to his character–still a cat, but influenced by all the humans around him.
tl;dr — Yay Marcus!
Marcus has thumbs. Cat-thumbs. I know it’s on purpose but it doesn’t make it any less freaky. What’s next? Clothes? A chopper?
Not like that wouldn’t be crazy awesome, but how long is he gonna keep mutating?
he’s always had thumbs through the whole comic. I guess this is the most obvious it’s been, though. Although they’re fairly visible in chapter one, as well.
Anyway I’m sure he’ll continue looking like a cat, nothing too crazy.
Also you should look up hemmingway’s cats for more freaky cat thumb action. Polydactyl cats exist in real life as well! Sometimes they can use them to pick up objects or open latches. D:
The paws are like mittens! That’s adorable! One more thing to be paranoid about, that cats can now open doors. How is Delia going to keep Marcus out of the food cabinet now? :O
Yes. I missed her.
Marcus, it’s okay if Garfield doesn’t act like a cat. Jon doesn’t act like a human!
Oh my god he’s turned into Stein! And adorably chubby! Now we know why he loved his cat so much <3
And she is back. And in style too.
Wait, why is the cat talking?
I don’t remember her having a talking ANYTHING let alone a talking cat.
jeeze, I know marcus hasn’t been in the comic in a while but come on
Yeah I mean what’s even with this not remembering the main character anyways.
Would this comic be called *String* Theory if the main character wasn’t a cat? Didn’t think so.

Definitely good enough. Thanks mate!
Sorry about forgetting, there’s been a spot of action in-betwixt said events.

would if I could, but I can’t. Oh well!
No complaints from me — I’ll wait as long as I have to, for your updates. The art alone is worth it!

Just wanted to point out that Beckey is a she :)
please don’t do this in the future.
Wait, has she lost it and she’s projecting the personality of her long-lots boss onto her cat?
You really need to re-read the first two chapters.
Marcus has gotten pretty big since we last saw him. I hope he and Schtein meet up soon-ish.
Hasn’t he continued to mutate since he exited the mutation machine? I think the author’s notes say he’s getting smarter, and has grown thumbs. By the end of this comic, I bet he’ll look like a Thundercat.
I.. I’m sorry… But I’m actually laughing myself to tears at thundercat Marcus
He’ll look like Snarf.
An update! With marcus & delia :D I didn’t realize how much I missed them until now. Also love the spotted Garfield on the tv screen. Beautiful as always!
Jokes on you, Marcus. Pizza is amazing.
YES!!
Stunning, Oswald. You look stunning.
Marcus is my favorite character
Dogs can eat the hell out of pizza. I’m sure a cat could work it out.
One of my cats takes every opportunity possible to steal pizza. He seems to quite enjoy it.
Yeah, I once had a cat that stole pizza too. He even once ate some that had green chile on it, seemed to like it. Of course, this is the same cat that liked peas so much he actually begged for them (in his own cat-like way).
I sure hope he’s watching Samurai Pizza Cats.
He so FLUFFY!
:D She looks great!
Marcus, you’re being such a moody teenager right now. http://images.dailydawdle.com/youre-not-my-real-mom.jpg
Also, it’s nice that Delia’s teaching him to read.
Marcus’ reply: MeOW
I’m sorry, that was bad.
Marcus should know that Garfield doesn’t really exist. He’s just a figment of Jon’s imagination, formed to escape from his crushing loneliness.
And now I miss the cute young Marcus :P I wonder how much time has passed. I’ve completely forgot the timeline of the comic for the last chapter.
a handful of months.
so the cat has aposeable thumbs
Oh boy, Kirby dots! :D
Wow, Marcus’s art style really has changed. He looks more broody now. Maybe he’s missing Schtein. I mean, who wouldn’t?
I remember Marcus. It makes sense he would hate Garfield, who doesn’t. Yesterday a stray came up and let me pet him. I only had pizza to share so I gave him a slice. That slice was gone within minutes, I’m glad he seemed to like it.

Loving that first panel. :) The rug and scenery and angle and all.

Catloaf!!!

“you’re not the boss of me”
If my cat could talk, it’d be her favourite line.
My god you can make ANYTHING look like such a jerk! Such lovely talent :)
Yay! Old friends are back!
Is Marcus going through kitty cat puberty? He’s used to be so little and perky… Garfield does kinda suck though, I’ll give him that.
Marcus has thumbs. Cat-thumbs. I know it’s on purpose but it doesn’t make it any less freaky. What’s next? Clothes? A chopper?

I dunno, the idea of cats opening doors just doesn’t worry me now that velociraptors have learned to open doors.
You look like the woman that forgot to feed the cat last night, ‘swhat you look like.
Marcus gets pretty angsty sometimes, eh? Love his expressions, especially the one in the fifth panel.
I actually own a cat with opposable thumbs. He climbs things like a monkey and throws his toys over-hand (paw?)
nuuu Marcus! what happened to you?! you so fat and old D:
what happened to my little “what’s a herpes?” DX
